About Canadian Forces Base Suffield Heliport
Canadian Forces Base Suffield Heliport is a military airfield serving Canadian Forces Base Suffield, the largest army training area in Canada. The base covers roughly 2,700 square kilometres of prairie in southeastern Alberta and has hosted military training since the early 1970s.
Located about 50 km (31 mi) northwest of Medicine Hat and around 250 km (160 mi) southeast of Calgary, the heliport supports military helicopters, aircraft and training exercises rather than scheduled commercial passenger flights. The airfield's history dates back to the 1940s, while the base was established as CFB Suffield in 1971.
Access to the heliport is controlled because it sits within a restricted military installation. The base is reached by road, primarily via Highway 884, which connects to Medicine Hat and the wider southern Alberta highway network.
For authorized personnel and visitors, onward travel generally continues by pre-arranged road transport to Medicine Hat, Calgary or nearby communities. The heliport provides operational and support facilities for military aviation rather than public passenger amenities.
