Butaritari Airport (BBG)

Butaritari Airport is the small airfield serving Butaritari Atoll, one of the fertile outer islands in the Gilbert Islands group of Kiribati. It provides a vital domestic link for the atoll's residents and visitors, with Air Kiribati flights connecting Butaritari to the capital, South Tarawa, and other islands.

Located close to the main settlement of Butaritari village, the airport has a single compact terminal shelter and one runway, with boarding handled directly from the apron. Operations are kept simple: check-in and baggage are managed manually by local staff, and there is no control tower, with flight information coordinated by radio from Tarawa.

Because the airport sits on a remote coral atoll, onward travel is usually arranged in advance through guesthouses or local contacts using trucks or motorbikes, as there is no public transport system. The short distance to Butaritari village makes the airport a convenient entry point for the atoll.

Facilities are limited, with no lounges, shops or banking services, so visitors are advised to carry cash, water and snacks. Despite its simplicity, the airport is an essential lifeline for moving people and local produce between Butaritari and the rest of Kiribati.
