Bunsil Airport (BXZ)

Bunsil Airport is a small regional airstrip serving Bunsil Station and surrounding communities on Umboi Island, part of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea. The island lies in the Bismarck Sea between mainland Papua New Guinea and New Britain, and the airstrip provides an important lifeline for passengers, supplies and medical evacuations.

The airport operates a single grass-and-gravel runway of about 600 metres, used mainly by light aircraft and short take-off and landing planes. Flights are generally charter or humanitarian services and are limited to daylight hours and suitable weather. There is no scheduled commercial service, and operations are normally coordinated in advance through local agents or charter operators.

Because Umboi Island has no road link to the mainland, onward travel usually involves local boats between coastal villages or charter flights to larger centres such as Lae, roughly 148 km away. There is no public transport at the airstrip, so transfers and onward connections should be arranged beforehand.

Facilities are basic, with simple shelter for waiting passengers and no shops, cafés, lounges or Wi-Fi. Travelers should come prepared with their own water and supplies, while pre-arranged private transfers and charter services offer the most reliable way to move between the airstrip and nearby areas.
