About Bar Yehuda Airfield
Bar Yehuda Airfield is a small desert airfield serving Masada, the Dead Sea and the southern Judean Desert. Located about 378 metres below sea level, it is widely regarded as the lowest airport in the world and sits close to the foot of the Masada fortress.
Opened in 1963 and named after Israeli politician Yisrael Bar-Yehuda, the airfield has a single paved runway of roughly 1,200 metres and one compact passenger terminal. It handles domestic, private and general aviation flights, and also serves as a base for skydiving and scenic flight activity over the Dead Sea and Masada.
The airfield lies about 4.2 kilometres from the Masada fortress access, between Arad and Ein Gedi and west of the Dead Sea. Jerusalem is around a 90-minute drive away, and road access makes onward travel to Dead Sea resorts, desert towns and other parts of the region practical.
