About Northern

Nazareth is the largest city in Israel's Northern District and the country's largest Arab-majority city, set among the hills of Lower Galilee. Best known as the childhood home of Jesus, it is a leading Christian pilgrimage centre and a busy regional hub for the Galilee.

The city's religious heritage is concentrated around the Basilica of the Annunciation, one of the largest churches in the Middle East, built where tradition says the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. Nearby stand the Church of St. Joseph, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, the Synagogue Church and Mary's Well, linking biblical history with centuries of pilgrimage.

Beyond the churches, Nazareth's Old City is a dense network of narrow lanes, stone houses and the lively Old Market, where spices, textiles, sweets and everyday goods fill the stalls. The area around Mary's Well and the White Mosque reflects the city's Muslim and Christian communities living side by side.

Modern Nazareth extends toward Nof HaGalil and surrounding towns and serves as a commercial, educational and administrative centre for northern Israel. Its Arab-Israeli cuisine, family restaurants, bakeries and cafés, together with religious festivals and events, give it a distinctive local character.

For travellers, Nazareth provides a compact base for exploring the Sea of Galilee, Mount Tabor, the Jezreel Valley and other Galilee sites, while its pilgrimage heritage and everyday life make it relevant for both leisure and business visits.
