About Banff Airport
Banff Airport is a small airstrip located in Banff National Park, Alberta, within the Canadian Rockies. Opened in 1937, it lies roughly 3 km north-northeast of Banff townsite, between the Trans-Canada Highway and the lower slopes of Cascade Mountain.
The airstrip has a single grass and snow runway and does not operate as a commercial passenger airport. Managed by Parks Canada, it has been closed to general aviation since 1997 and reopened in 2007 only for emergency, diversionary and specially approved operations.
Because scheduled airline services are not available, most travelers reach the Banff area through larger airports such as Calgary International Airport and continue by road. The airstrip itself has no public terminal, check-in, security or baggage facilities.
For onward travel, Banff townsite, Lake Louise and Canmore are accessible by private transfer, taxi, shuttle, chauffeur service or rental car along the Trans-Canada Highway, making road connections the practical way to continue a journey.
