About Ashburton Aerodrome
Ashburton Aerodrome is a small general aviation airport serving Ashburton and the wider Mid Canterbury district on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is owned by Ashburton District Council and operates as the district's main location for light aviation, flight training and private flying, rather than as a scheduled passenger hub.
The airfield has a significant history. It served as a Royal New Zealand Air Force Elementary Flying Training School during World War II, when more than 1,100 pilots were trained there. Today it retains four grass runways and remains an active hub for the Mid Canterbury Aero Club and general aviation enthusiasts.
Located around 4–5 km east of Ashburton town centre, the aerodrome sits close to State Highway 1. Ashburton lies roughly 80 km south of Christchurch and about 65 km northeast of Timaru, making the airport a convenient access point for private flights into Mid Canterbury.
Passenger facilities are limited and reflect the airport's general aviation role. The aero club base provides basic amenities, while the Ashburton Aviation Museum on the airfield houses one of the country's larger aircraft collections. Onward travel is typically by private car, transfer, chauffeur or rental vehicle.
