Arorae Island Airport (AIS)

Arorae Island Airport is the only air gateway to Arorae, the southernmost island in Kiribati's Gilbert Islands group. It plays a small domestic role, linking the island's two villages, Tamaroa and Roreti, with the rest of Kiribati through scheduled Air Kiribati services. The airport is located in the northern part of the island, close to Tamaroa, and operates a single compact terminal with a runway of about 945 metres. Because of its size and remote setting, services are limited and flight arrivals are important events for the local community. Air Kiribati connects Arorae with Tabiteuea North Airport, allowing onward domestic travel to other islands in the Gilbert group. There is no international service, and all passengers must continue through domestic routes. Ground transportation is informal, with local pickup trucks, motorbikes and arranged transfers covering the short distances to Tamaroa, Roreti and nearby coastal areas. The airport's small scale keeps driving times short, but travellers should plan around limited flight schedules.
