About Aklavik/Freddie Carmichael Airport

Aklavik/Freddie Carmichael Airport is a small public airport serving Aklavik, a hamlet of about 600 people in the Mackenzie Delta of the Northwest Territories. Located adjacent to the community on the Peel Channel of the Mackenzie River delta, the airport is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories and named after Freddie Carmichael, a northern aviator.

The airport is an essential year-round transport link because Aklavik has no permanent all-season road connection. Scheduled flights operated by North-Wright Airways connect Aklavik with Inuvik in about 20 minutes, while seasonal ice roads and water routes provide additional access at certain times of the year. The airport has a single gravel runway measuring approximately 3,002 by 75 feet and one small terminal building.

The airport is about 0.5 km from the hamlet centre, making it easy to reach local accommodation and community facilities. Ground transport options are limited, and most visitors arrange local pickups, taxis or private transfers in advance.

Although the terminal is compact and offers basic passenger facilities, the airport plays a vital role in moving passengers, cargo and essential supplies to and from the Mackenzie Delta region throughout the year.
