About Aitape Airport
Aitape Airport is a small regional airfield serving Aitape, a coastal town of around 18,000 people on the north coast of Papua New Guinea's Sandaun Province. It provides an essential domestic air link for passengers, supplies and government services along the remote Sepik coast.
The site has wartime origins as a World War II airfield, and today the airport operates with a single paved runway and a compact passenger terminal. Regional turboprop aircraft such as the Twin Otter and Dash 8 connect Aitape with the provincial capital Vanimo and the national hub at Port Moresby.
Located close to central Aitape, the airport is reached by local PMV minibuses, occasional taxis, pre-arranged pickups and private transfers. Most onward travel is arranged in advance, since scheduled ground transport at the airfield is limited.
Passenger facilities are deliberately simple, with a sheltered waiting area and limited seating. Travellers should carry cash in Papua New Guinea kina, as shops and ATMs are found mainly in Aitape town rather than at the airport.
