About Abemama Airport
Abemama Airport is the main airport serving Abemama Atoll, part of the Gilbert Islands in central Kiribati. It provides the atoll's principal domestic air link, with Air Kiribati flights connecting Abemama to Bonriki International Airport in South Tarawa, the capital.
The airport sits at the northern end of the atoll, roughly 200 metres northeast of the village of Tabiang, and operates from a single runway of about 1,244 metres. The compact terminal handles domestic arrivals and departures, and the facility lies close to local villages and guesthouse areas.
From the airport, travelers can continue by road or pre-arranged vehicle to settlements such as Tabiang, Kariatebike and other villages along the atoll. For islands and islets in the group, onward travel typically continues by boat or inter-island services.
Because Abemama has no road link to Tarawa, the scheduled domestic flight of around 30 minutes is the standard connection to the capital. The airport therefore functions as a small but essential gateway for residents and visitors moving between Tarawa and the southern Gilbert Islands.
