About Monagas
Maturín is the capital of Monagas state and the main commercial and administrative centre of eastern Venezuela. Located near the Guarapiche River about 520 km east of Caracas, the city is known locally as “La Ciudad Distinta” and combines a warm tropical setting with the practical energy of an oil and agricultural hub.
Maturín was founded on 7 December 1760 by Capuchin friar Lucas de Zaragoza as a mission settlement, and it takes its name from an indigenous chief. The city played a notable role in the independence struggle, most famously at the Battle of Alto de Los Godos in May 1813, and became the capital of Monagas when the state was created in 1909.
Its historic centre is anchored by Plaza Bolívar, the Government Palace and the 18th-century San Simón church, while the Catedral Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Paseo Libertador reflect the city's more modern institutional face. Families and visitors also spend time at Parque Zoológico La Guaricha, the Museo Mateo Manaure and the Complejo Cultural.
The surrounding region is important for petroleum, livestock and agriculture, and Maturín hosts the Monagas operations of Venezuela's state oil industry as well as the Zona Industrial. Local restaurants serve arepas, empanadas, grilled meats and fresh fruit juices, and the centre has a modest but lively café and nightlife scene focused around the main avenues and plazas.
For travellers, Maturín serves as a gateway to eastern Venezuela and the Orinoco Delta, with road connections toward Caracas, the Caribbean coast and the south. Business visitors come for the energy and agro-industrial sectors, while leisure travellers use the city as a practical base for regional exploration.
