About Namangan
Namangan is one of the largest cities in eastern Uzbekistan and the administrative centre of Namangan Region, set in the fertile northern Fergana Valley. The city is widely known as Uzbekistan's "city of flowers", a reputation built on its nurseries, elaborate public gardens and the spring flower festival that fills Babur Park and the streets with colourful displays.
The settlement grew around salt mining and later became a busy trade and craft centre within the Kokand Khanate, known for pottery and textiles. Russian imperial and Soviet rule brought industrial growth, and today the city combines an older quarter of low-rise mahallas with Soviet-era avenues and newer commercial buildings.
Key landmarks include the large Babur Park, with flower beds, fountains and walking paths, and the Mullo Kyrgyz Madrasah, a restored early-20th-century religious school. The monumental Ota Valikhon Tur Mosque and the modern Yusufxon Ugli Qosimxon Mosque show the city's architectural range, while the busy Chorsu bazaar and the Regional Studies Museum offer everyday local colour and history.
Beyond the centre, the archaeological site of Akhsikent near the Syr Darya is the remains of an ancient Fergana Valley capital and makes a rewarding day trip. Local experiences range from tea houses and open-air markets to the spring flower festival, which has been a Namangan tradition since the 1960s.
Namangan is also a regional hub for horticulture, food processing and light industry, with an international airport linking it to domestic and international routes. Its combination of gardens, bazaars, mosques and Fergana Valley setting gives both leisure and business travellers a distinctive base in eastern Uzbekistan.
