About Colonia

Colonia del Sacramento is Uruguay's oldest town and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed river city, set on the Río de la Plata directly across from Buenos Aires. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, it is best known for its compact Barrio Histórico of cobblestone streets, pastel-painted houses and low ramparts that overlook the river.

The town's history is written into its layout: it changed hands between Portugal and Spain several times before becoming part of independent Uruguay in 1828. Landmarks include the Portón de Campo city gate, the lighthouse known as El Faro, Calle de los Suspiros, the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament and the ruins of the San Francisco convent.

Beyond the old walls, the newer Spanish grid opens into a relaxed commercial centre and a riverside Rambla, with beaches such as Calabrés and Fernando nearby. Museums, historic houses and the old bullring at Real de San Carlos add depth to a destination that remains easy to explore on foot.

Colonia also has a practical side as a regional gateway, with frequent ferry links to Buenos Aires, a free trade zone and plans for a knowledge-economy development called Colonia Ala Este. Its riverside restaurants, cafés and laid-back events calendar give it a slower, more intimate energy than Uruguay's capital.

For leisure travellers, Colonia offers history, river views and a calm overnight or day-trip escape. Business visitors value its ferry connections, local services and convenient access along Route 1 to Montevideo.
