About Sharjah
Sharjah is the third-largest city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah, widely regarded as the country's cultural capital. Located along the Arabian Gulf coast and directly adjacent to Dubai, it combines a deep Islamic and maritime heritage with a strong focus on museums, education and the arts.
The city's heritage is concentrated in the restored Heart of Sharjah district, where landmarks such as Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn), the Souq Al Arsah and traditional wind-tower houses sit close to the waterfront. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Art Museum and Sharjah Art Foundation highlight the emirate's long-standing investment in culture and knowledge.
Along the Khaled Lagoon, Al Majaz Waterfront, Al Noor Island and the family-friendly Al Qasba canal area offer gardens, cafés, restaurants and evening activities. The Central Souq, often called the Blue Souq, is a recognisable landmark for gold, textiles and souvenirs, while the nearby desert and East Coast exclaves add outdoor variety.
Sharjah is also an important business and logistics centre, with University City, the American University of Sharjah, Hamriyah Free Zone and Sharjah International Airport supporting trade, manufacturing and events. Its annual book fair and cultural festivals reinforce the emirate's regional and international profile.
For travellers, Sharjah offers a more conservative, family-oriented and culturally focused alternative to neighbouring Dubai, while remaining well connected for leisure, business and short regional trips.
