About Sukhothai

Sukhothai is a small, historically significant city in lower northern Thailand and is widely regarded as the cradle of Thai civilisation. It served as the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom during the 13th and 14th centuries, and its UNESCO World Heritage-listed old city preserves the foundations of Thai art, architecture, language and Buddhism.

The heart of the destination is the Sukhothai Historical Park, where brick stupas, lotus-bud chedis, moats and lakes sit among manicured grounds. Key monuments include Wat Mahathat, the park's grand centrepiece; Wat Si Chum, with its monumental seated Buddha; Wat Sri Sawai, with Khmer-style prangs; and Wat Sa Si, set on an island. A statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, credited with creating the Thai script, stands in the park.

The modern town, Sukhothai Thani, lies about 12 kilometres east of the old city and offers hotels, restaurants, markets and transport links, while the old city around Mueang Kao is quieter and closer to the ruins. Around 55 kilometres north, the Si Satchanalai Historical Park extends the same World Heritage listing with further temples and kiln sites known for Sangkhalok ceramics.

Sukhothai is especially known for its Loy Krathong celebrations in November, when the historical park glows with lanterns, processions and performances. Local food such as kuaitiao Sukhothai, a rice noodle dish with a distinctive broth, and lively evening markets add everyday appeal, while the pace is far more relaxed than in Chiang Mai or Bangkok.

For travellers, Sukhothai works as a rewarding cultural stopover between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Leisure visitors come for the ruins, cycling and festivals, while business and event travellers value the small Sukhothai Airport, comfortable accommodation and an unhurried setting for meetings and heritage excursions.

Sukhothai Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for cycling around the historical park and exploring the ruins. November also brings the atmospheric Loy Krathong festival, while the hot season from March to May and the rainy season from June to October are quieter.

How to Get Around

Where to Stay

The old city area around the historical park is ideal for early-morning visits and a peaceful atmosphere, while Sukhothai Thani offers a wider choice of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and bus connections. Boutique guesthouses and small resorts are common in both areas.

Food & Drink

Sukhothai is known for kuaitiao Sukhothai, a local rice noodle dish with sliced pork, green beans and a light, fragrant broth. Night markets, riverside restaurants and casual cafés serve Thai classics, while Sangkhalok ceramics provide a distinctive local souvenir.
