About Roi Et

Roi Et is the capital of Roi Et province, a quiet provincial centre in Thailand's northeastern Isan region. The name translates as '101', a reference to the city's historic satellite settlements and gates, and the town remains best known for its relaxed pace, surrounding rice-growing countryside and welcoming local character.

Much of city life centres on Bueng Phalan Chai, a large lake and park in the middle of town that draws residents for walks, boat rides and evening relaxation. Nearby, the Roi Et observation tower offers views over the city, while Wat Burapha Phiram houses Phra Phuttha Rattana Mongkhon Maha Muni, one of Thailand's tallest standing Buddha images at about 59 metres.

The compact centre is easy to explore, with the Roi Et National Museum presenting local history, archaeology and Isan culture including silk weaving. Outside the city, the striking Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkhon in Nong Phok district and the wide lake known locally as Bueng Kluea, or the 'Isan Sea', are popular day-trip destinations.

Roi Et is an agricultural and trade hub for a province known especially for jasmine rice, and its calendar is shaped by Isan traditions such as the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival in Phanom Phrai district and local food fairs. Visitors can sample som tam, larb, grilled chicken, sticky rice and khao poon rice noodles at markets and modest family-run eateries.

For travellers, Roi Et offers a relaxed base for experiencing everyday Isan life, historic temples and regional food, while Roi Et Airport provides direct domestic connections to Bangkok. Business visitors find a compact provincial centre with hotels, government offices and straightforward access to surrounding districts.
