About Loei
Loei is the compact capital of Loei Province in Thailand's upper northeastern Isaan region, close to the Laos border along the Mekong River. Framed by the Phetchabun mountain range, it serves as a gateway to cool highland parks, fog-covered summits and some of Thailand's most distinctive local traditions.
The town grew from a small community within the Lan Chang sphere before joining the Ayutthaya kingdom and later becoming Loei Province under King Rama V. Today its character is relaxed and riverside, with the Loei River running through the centre, the Chao Por Kut Pong city pillar shrine, and several temples blending Lanna and Lan Chang styles.
Around the city, Phu Kradueng, Phu Ruea and Phu Luang national parks draw hikers with cliffs, waterfalls, pine forest and cool-season fog. To the north, Chiang Khan's wooden shophouses and Mekong walking street are a popular overnight stop, while Dan Sai hosts the masked Phi Ta Khon festival and the Lan Chang-style Phrathat Si Song Rak.
Loei's economy is rooted in agriculture, with sweet tamarind, rice, fruit and cool-climate crops as regional signatures, and the town's night market and riverside food streets serve Isaan staples such as grilled meats, papaya salad and sticky rice. Seasonal events like the Phu Ruea winter flower fair and the Cotton Blossom Festival add local colour.
Leisure visitors use Loei as a base for mountain and Mekong towns, while business travellers find provincial government services, agricultural trade connections and small meetings and events. Direct flights from Bangkok to Loei Airport keep the province accessible year-round.

Loei Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable period, with mild days and chilly nights in the mountains. October to December brings the famous sea of fog, while around New Year the Phu Ruea winter flower festival adds seasonal colour. The rainy season, roughly May to October, is greener but can limit mountain hiking.
How to Get Around
Loei town is walkable, and short trips can be made by tuk-tuk or songthaew. For national parks, Chiang Khan, Dan Sai and other rural sights, a rental car or private driver is the most practical option; motorbikes are also popular for independent travel. There is no train station, but Loei Airport links the province with Bangkok by daily flights.
Where to Stay
Staying in Loei town near the river and night market gives easy access to transport and dining. Chiang Khan offers riverside guesthouses and heritage wooden houses along the Mekong walking street, while Phu Ruea and Phu Kradueng have lodges and campsites close to the national parks.
Food & Drink
Loei's food scene is classic Isaan, built around grilled meats, som tam, sticky rice and spicy dips, with the town's night market and riverside food streets as easy starting points.
