About Värmland

Karlstad is the capital of Värmland County in west-central Sweden, set on a river delta where the Klarälven flows into Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. Nicknamed Solstaden, or 'the sun city', for its comparatively high number of sunshine hours, the city has a compact centre, wide tree-lined avenues and a relaxed riverside character.

Founded in 1584 by Duke Karl, later King Karl IX, Karlstad grew as a trading and administrative town and was rebuilt with broad streets and stone buildings after a major fire in 1865. Landmarks such as Karlstad Cathedral, the East Bridge over the Klarälven and the Sola i Karlstad statue reflect the city's heritage.

Central neighbourhoods include Tingvallastaden, the historic core around Stora Torget, along with Norrstrand, Haga and the university district of Kronoparken. Visitors can explore Värmlands Museum, the Sandgrund Lars Lerin art gallery, Mariebergsskogen park and zoo, and the Old Stone Bridge and waterfront promenades along the Klarälven.

Karlstad is also a regional centre for education, business and events, home to Karlstad University, the Karlstad CCC congress and culture venue, and Löfbergs Arena, where Färjestad BK plays ice hockey. Local dining includes fika cafés, Värmland potato sausage, lake fish and modern Swedish restaurants.

As the gateway to Värmland's lakes, forests and ski areas, Karlstad combines urban convenience with easy access to outdoor recreation. This makes it a practical base for both leisure travellers exploring western Sweden and business visitors attending meetings and conferences.
