About Para

Onverwacht is the small administrative capital of Para District in northern Suriname, set along the Indira Gandhiweg roughly 35 kilometres south of Paramaribo. It acts as the quiet gateway to a district of savannah, forest, former plantations and mining and forestry activity.

The settlement began as a wood plantation as early as 1667, and in 1881 the land was sold to eight formerly enslaved people. The Lawa Railway reached Onverwacht around 1910, and the town later became the district capital; traces of that railway past survive around the old station.

Nearby highlights include Colakreek, a blackwater recreation area west of Zanderij where the water has a Coca-Cola-like colour, and Jodensavanne, the ruins of a historic Jewish settlement on the Suriname River. Zanderij is also the site of Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, Suriname's main international gateway.

Para District is Suriname's mining and forestry centre, with bauxite and timber central to the local economy, and Paranam is a well-known industrial town in the district. The area also contains Indigenous and Maroon communities and open savannah patches within the surrounding tropical forest.

For travellers, Onverwacht works as a stopover or base between Paramaribo, the airport and inland destinations. Business visitors arrive for mining, forestry and logistics, while leisure travellers use the district for nature outings, swimming and relaxation at Colakreek and short breaks outside the capital.

Para Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Suriname has two dry seasons, roughly February to April and August to November, which are the most comfortable periods for outdoor trips to Colakreek and the surrounding savannah. Onverwacht can be visited year-round, but the wet seasons from April to August and November to February bring heavier rain.

How to Get Around

The Indira Gandhiweg links Onverwacht with Paramaribo, Zanderij and the airport, with buses and shared taxis serving the main route. Public transport is limited in rural parts of Para District, so private transfers, rental cars or a hired driver are useful for reaching Colakreek, Jodensavanne and other sights.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Onverwacht itself is limited, so many visitors stay in Paramaribo and explore Para District as a day trip. Small guesthouses and nature-oriented cabins can be found around Colakreek and Zanderij for travellers who prefer to stay closer to the forest and airport.

Food & Drink

Local eating in and around Onverwacht centres on Surinamese and Javanese dishes such as roti, pom, saoto soup and nasi. Small warungs and roadside eateries serve simple, affordable meals, while Colakreek offers refreshments and open-air recreation areas.
