About Lower Juba
Kismayo is a port city on Somalia's southern Indian Ocean coast and the capital of both Jubaland state and the Lower Juba region. Located near the mouth of the Jubba River about 500 km southwest of Mogadishu, it is Somalia's third-largest city and a historic trading gateway between the fertile Jubba Valley and the sea.
The city began as a small fishing settlement and later passed through the Ajuran Sultanate and a colonial era when it was known as Chisimaio. That layered history remains visible in the old lighthouse, the port and the colonial-era old town of Alanley, while Alanley Beach and the nearby Kismayo National Park provide coastal and wildlife contrasts.
Neighbourhoods such as Central Kismayo, Farjano, Shaqalaha, Calanleey, Via Afmadow and Fanole give the city its structure. Visitors can explore the busy fish market, watch port activity, walk the beachfront, or visit the stadium, Kismayo University and local cultural sites for a sense of everyday life.
Kismayo's economy is built around the port, fishing, livestock, trade and agriculture from the Jubba Valley. The food scene mixes Somali staples such as bariis iskukaris, sambusa, camel meat and fresh seafood, served in tea shops, open-air restaurants and small local eateries.
For business travellers, Kismayo is a growing commercial and administrative centre for southern Somalia; for leisure visitors it offers beaches, wildlife, food and a less-travelled stretch of the Somali coast. Most visitors arrive through Kismayo Airport, about 10 km from the city centre.

Lower Juba Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months from December to March and July to September are generally the most practical for travel in Kismayo. The Gu rains (April to June) and Deyr rains (October to November) can make roads and movement outside the city more difficult.
How to Get Around
Kismayo is a relatively compact city where taxis, bajaj auto-rickshaws and motorbike taxis are common for short trips. For longer or cross-city journeys, visitors typically use private cars or hired drivers, and road conditions outside town can be rough.
Where to Stay
Accommodation options are limited but concentrated around the city centre and along main routes near the airport and port. Guesthouses and small hotels serve business travellers, aid workers and visitors, with Central Kismayo convenient for the market, port and main roads.
Food & Drink
Kismayo's food scene is centred on fresh seafood, bariis iskukaris (spiced rice), grilled camel meat, sambusa and anjero. The lively fish market, tea shops and small open-air restaurants offer a direct taste of local Somali cooking.
