About Sédhiou
Sédhiou is the capital of Sédhiou Region in Senegal's Casamance, set on the right bank of the Casamance River in the country's southwest. The town has a quiet, green, riverside character and is a useful base for exploring the less-touristed Haute Casamance area.
The town's history is visible in its colonial-era buildings, especially the ruined Fort Pinet-Laprade near the central market. Sédhiou became a regional capital in 2008 after the region was separated from Kolda, and the surrounding Pakao area is an important centre of Mandinka culture and Islamic heritage.
Key sights include the Grande Mosquée de Sédhiou, the central market and the river island known as Île du Diable, which can be reached by local boat trips and is known for its birdlife and local legends. Across the Casamance River, the village of Sandinièr offers a glimpse of rural riverside life.
Agriculture, fishing and aquaculture shape the local economy, with rice, millet and peanuts grown in the surrounding valleys. The town's markets and riverside setting, along with Mandinka traditions and nearby kora music villages, give Sédhiou a distinctive cultural atmosphere.
For travellers, Sédhiou works well as a stopover or base between Ziguinchor, Kolda and The Gambia. It suits visitors interested in regional history, river landscapes and everyday Casamance life, while business travel centres on agriculture, administration and local trade.

Sédhiou Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to May is the most practical time to visit Sédhiou, with easier roads and better conditions for river trips and walking. Heavy rains from June to October can make regional routes and tracks more difficult.
How to Get Around
Sédhiou is compact enough to explore on foot around the market, riverbank and colonial buildings. Shared sept-place taxis, minibuses and taxi-motos connect neighbourhoods and nearby towns, while local boats and an occasional ferry cross the Casamance River.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited but includes riverside options such as La Palmeraie and simpler guesthouses like Chez Nous near the centre. Staying near the market or river gives easy access to restaurants, the fort and boat departures.
Food & Drink
Local food centres on Senegalese and Mandinka dishes such as rice with fish, yassa and grilled Casamance fish, often available at market stalls and small restaurants. Street food, fresh juices, palm wine and neighbourhood cafés round out the dining scene.
