About Mayagüez
Mayagüez is a historic port and university city on Puerto Rico's western coast, often called La Sultana del Oeste. Its compact centre is built around Plaza Colón, where the Christopher Columbus statue, city hall and the pastel-coloured Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria anchor the city's civic life.
The city grew as an agricultural and shipping hub, and its late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture remains visible in landmarks such as the Yagüez Theater, the former customs house and the Mayagüez Post Office. The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez brings students and research activity to the area and sits beside Puerto Rico's only zoo, Dr. Juan A. Rivero Zoo.
Mayagüez functions as the commercial and cultural centre of western Puerto Rico, with shops, cafés, restaurants and a working seafront. It is also a practical base for exploring nearby destinations including Rincón, Cabo Rojo, San Germán and the beaches of the west coast.
Visitors come for its relaxed urban atmosphere, Caribbean food scene, university events and access to outdoor attractions. For business travellers, the city supports regional commerce, research and conferences, while leisure travellers use it as a gateway to the island's western coast.
