About Sultan Kudarat
Sultan Kudarat is a province in the Soccsksargen region of central Mindanao in the southern Philippines, with the municipality of Isulan as its capital and Tacurong as its commercial centre and only city. Named after Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat, a respected 17th-century Maguindanao leader, the province is known for its agricultural landscapes, mixed Muslim and Christian communities and growing eco-tourism.
The province's most recognisable landmark is the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Capitol in Isulan, a grand golden-domed building with Islamic-inspired architecture and a statue of the sultan on its grounds. Local culture is reflected in events such as the Kalimudan Festival, Isulan's Hamungaya Festival and Tacurong's Talakudong Festival, which bring together music, dance, food and craft traditions from different communities.
Nature-based attractions include the Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong, where thousands of herons, egrets and migratory birds return at dusk, and the scenic La Palmera Mountain Ridge and Pangadilan Falls in Columbio. Other destinations include Bansada Agri-Eco Adventure Park in Bagumbayan, Lutayan Lake in Lutayan and the coastal towns of Kalamansig and Palimbang, which offer beaches, fishing communities and island views.
Agriculture drives much of the local economy, with rice, corn, oil palm, coffee and fishing among the main activities, while Tacurong serves as a hub for trade, transport and services. The province is reachable by road from General Santos International Airport, making it a practical stop for travellers exploring the wider Soccsksargen region.
For visitors, Sultan Kudarat offers a less crowded alternative to better-known Philippine destinations, combining provincial landmarks, birdwatching, highland scenery, coastal towns and cultural festivals in one compact but varied region.
