About Misamis Occidental

Oroquieta City is the capital of Misamis Occidental, a province in the Northern Mindanao region of the Philippines. Set along the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan Bay, it is a compact provincial capital known locally as the "City of Good Life." The city combines a working waterfront, government offices and a relaxed small-town pace while serving as the administrative heart of the province.

The area's older name was Layawan, a settlement that became the provincial capital, or cabecera, in 1930 and was chartered as a city in 1970. During World War II, Oroquieta briefly functioned as the seat of the Free Philippine government under the guerrilla movement, an episode that still shapes local historical memory.

The most recognizable landmark is the Misamis Occidental Provincial Capitol, and the City Plaza with its historic Kiosko bandstand remains a community gathering point. Along the coast, Libertad Seaport and Boulevard and Layawan Beach are popular for walks and sunsets, while the Layawan River runs through the city. Just outside the urban core, Mount Malindang Range Natural Park, an ASEAN Heritage Park, offers forested slopes, waterfalls and trekking routes.

Culture is strongly tied to the Subanen heritage of the region, highlighted by the Perangat Festival along with the city's Charter Day and Cabecera anniversary celebrations. Everyday life is centred on fishing, farming and local commerce, with seafood a defining part of the city's identity.

For visitors, Oroquieta works as a base for exploring Misamis Occidental, including nearby Ozamiz and Tangub, and for reaching Mount Malindang and coastal destinations. Business and government travelers come for provincial administration, while leisure visitors are drawn by festivals, nature and the city's unhurried coastal atmosphere.
