About Negros Oriental

Dumaguete is the capital of Negros Oriental and a compact university city on the southeast coast of Negros Island in the Philippines. Often called 'The City of Gentle People,' it combines a relaxed seafront, a busy provincial centre and a strong student culture shaped by Silliman University, one of the country's oldest American-founded institutions.

Rizal Boulevard is the city's best-known promenade, stretching along the waterfront with old houses, hotels, cafés and views toward the nearby islands of Cebu and Siquijor. The city's Spanish-era landmarks include St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral and its 19th-century campanario, or belfry, which stands beside Quezon Park.

Beyond the city centre, Dumaguete works as a gateway to some of the region's most rewarding outdoor experiences. Apo Island and the Dauin coast are known for sea turtles and diving, while Casaroro Falls, Pulangbato Falls and the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes sit in the forested hills around Valencia and Sibulan.

Food and everyday life remain distinctly local. Painitan public market is a morning tradition for budbud kabog, a millet rice cake served with hot sikwate chocolate, and the Sans Rival bakery has made Dumaguete's silvanas a favourite take-home treat across the Philippines.

Because it is a provincial capital with government offices, banks, universities and a growing BPO sector, Dumaguete also serves business travellers and conference visitors. For leisure and work alike, it offers an easygoing base with direct access to the coast, the university district and the mountains of southern Negros.

Tricycles are the standard way to move around Dumaguete, with jeepneys and buses serving nearby towns and longer routes. Many central streets around Rizal Boulevard and Silliman University are walkable, and rental cars, motorbikes or private vans are useful for waterfalls, the coast and mountain day trips.

Where to Stay

Rizal Boulevard and the downtown area put hotels, restaurants and the seafront within walking distance. Dauin and the coast south of the city suit divers, while Valencia offers quieter hillside stays close to waterfalls and forest.
