About Camarines Sur
Naga City is the largest city in Camarines Sur and a major center of the Bicol Region, known locally as the Heart of Bicol for its central position on the Bicol Peninsula and its role in trade, education and pilgrimage. The city's identity is closely tied to its historic churches, the Naga River and the annual Peñafrancia Festival.
Founded as the Spanish colonial city of Nueva Cáceres in 1575, Naga is one of the oldest cities in the Philippines and was once the capital of the Ambos Camarines provinces. The Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, seat of the Archdiocese of Caceres, and the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Peñafrancia reflect that long religious and colonial history.
The Peñafrancia Festival each September draws one of the largest Marian pilgrimages in Asia, when the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is carried through the city and along the Naga River. Nearby Mount Isarog National Park offers waterfalls, forest trails and cooler highland scenery for outdoor visitors.
Naga functions as a commercial, educational and medical hub for the region, with universities, markets, shopping areas and a growing local economy. Its central Bicol location also makes it a practical base for reaching Pili, the Caramoan islands and other parts of Camarines Sur.
For both leisure and business travelers, Naga combines religious heritage, regional cuisine, local festivals and convenient access to southern Luzon, making it a distinctive and practical destination in the Philippines.
