About Cagayan
Cagayan de Oro, often shortened to CDO and known as the 'City of Golden Friendship,' is the capital of Misamis Oriental and the main gateway to Northern Mindanao. The city stretches along the Cagayan de Oro River toward Macajalar Bay and is best known for whitewater rafting, a lively urban centre and a growing regional economy.
The city's history reaches back to the pre-colonial settlement of Himologan, which Spanish missionaries relocated to the area around present-day Gaston Park in the 17th century. Landmarks such as St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral, Gaston Park, the old water tower and the Museo de Oro reflect this Spanish and local heritage, while modern malls and offices show its rapid growth.
Downtown Divisoria and Cogon remain busy commercial districts with markets, street food and heritage buildings. Around Limketkai and Centrio, travellers find larger malls, hotels and restaurants. Nature is close by: Mapawa Nature Park, the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village and the river's rapids offer outdoor escapes within a short drive.
As Northern Mindanao's business hub, Cagayan de Oro hosts trade, education, medical and business process outsourcing activity, plus conferences and trade shows. The Higalaay Festival each August honours St. Augustine with street parades and cultural performances, while local food ranges from Vjandep pastel and fresh seafood to kinilaw and grilled dishes.
For leisure travellers, the city is a base for adventure, festivals and trips to Camiguin, Bukidnon and other parts of Misamis Oriental. For business visitors, Laguindingan Airport and a wide range of hotels make it the practical entry point to the region.
