About Ñeembucú
Pilar is the capital of Paraguay's Ñeembucú Department, a compact riverside city on the east bank of the Paraguay River, directly across from Argentina. Founded in 1779, it remains known for its relaxed pace, well-preserved colonial-era buildings and a long tradition of hospitality that has earned it the nickname 'capital of Paraguayan cordiality'.
The city's history is visible throughout its centre. The Cabildo de Pilar, now the Museo Histórico Cabildo, displays objects linked to the War of the Triple Alliance, while the Casa de los Granada dates from 1792. The Basílica Menor y Santuario Regional Nuestra Señora del Pilar, elevated to a minor basilica in 1979, anchors the main square and the city's annual 12 October patronal festival.
The riverside Costanera is Pilar's most popular public space, drawing locals and visitors for sunset views over the Paraguay River. Nearby, the hexagonal cobblestone streets, Plaza de los Héroes and the historic Manufactura de Pilar textile complex from 1931 reflect the city's architectural and industrial heritage. Boat trips, river beaches such as Playa Arroyo Ñeembucú and the Laguna Gadea area add outdoor options.
As the commercial centre of southern Paraguay, Pilar combines textile production, fishing, dairy processing and river trade. It is also a gateway to the wetlands of Ñeembucú and to the historic town of Humaitá, where the ruins, Batería Londres and the former headquarters of Marshal Francisco Solano López tell the story of the Triple Alliance War.
For travelers, Pilar offers an unhurried base for history, river landscapes and border-region culture. Business visitors can reach the city from Asunción by road or through its local airport, while the riverside setting and nearby historic sites make it a distinctive stop in southern Paraguay.
