About Alto Paraná

Ciudad del Este is Paraguay's second-largest city and the capital of the Alto Paraná department, set on the Paraná River at the Triple Frontier where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet. Known mainly as a busy commercial and border-trade centre, the city combines high-energy shopping streets, a multicultural population and easy access to some of the region's most impressive natural and engineering landmarks.

The city was founded in 1957 as Puerto Flor de Lis and later renamed Puerto Presidente Stroessner before becoming Ciudad del Este after the end of the dictatorship. Its growth was driven by the Friendship Bridge to Brazil, completed in 1965, and by the nearby Acaray and Itaipu hydroelectric dams. The Friendship Bridge remains a defining landmark, and San Blas Cathedral anchors the central area.

The commercial heart follows Avenida San Blas and surrounding streets, where electronics, clothing and duty-free goods draw shoppers from across the border region. Beyond the shops, visitors head to the Itaipu Dam, one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants, the Monday Falls and the Republic Lake, a local recreation spot. Modern malls and markets sit alongside a growing array of Brazilian, Lebanese, Chinese and Korean restaurants.

Ciudad del Este matters for both leisure and business travellers as a regional trade hub connecting Paraguay with southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Itaipu Binacional, logistics companies and import-export businesses support a steady flow of corporate visitors, while conferences, shopping trips and excursions to Foz do Iguaçu and the Iguazú Falls keep the travel calendar active.

Leisure visitors use the city as a base for the Triple Frontier and Iguazú Falls region, while business travellers value its commercial energy and direct border connections. Together, these roles make Ciudad del Este a distinctive, fast-moving gateway to eastern Paraguay.

Alto Paraná Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The most comfortable months are March to May and September to November, when temperatures are milder and rain is less intense. June to August is cool and pleasant for sightseeing, while December to February is hot and humid with frequent storms. Border shopping and dam visits are possible year-round, but avoid the hottest summer afternoons for outdoor activities.

How to Get Around

Local buses, taxis, remises and moto-taxis serve the city centre and the route toward the Friendship Bridge to Brazil. Renting a car is useful for reaching Itaipu Dam, Monday Falls and Foz do Iguaçu, while walking works well in the compact commercial district around Avenida San Blas.

Where to Stay

Hotels are concentrated in the downtown shopping area near Avenida San Blas and around the quieter Lago de la República zone. Staying in the centre suits shoppers and business visitors, while Foz do Iguaçu across the border offers alternatives for travellers focused on the Iguazú Falls region.

Food & Drink

Local eating ranges from Paraguayan staples such as chipa, sopa paraguaya, asado and empanadas to strong Brazilian, Lebanese, Chinese and Korean influences. Tereré, the cold yerba mate drink, is part of daily life, and shopping malls, markets and family-run restaurants offer quick and affordable meals across the city.
