About Jiwaka
Jiwaka is a province in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, created in 2012 from part of Western Highlands Province and named after the Jimi, Waghi and Kambia people. Its cool mountain climate, fertile Wahgi Valley and strong customary traditions give the province a distinctive character.
The Waghi River and tributaries such as the Bisil Kana River shape the landscape, while the Kurumul Tea Plantation, Banz market and mountain villages of Jimi District are among its best-known local experiences. Banz serves as the main commercial and administrative centre, with Kurumul and Minj also important hubs.
Jiwaka is known for Highlands cultural life, including singsings, bride price ceremonies and the annual Waghi Show held in June. Visitors can meet local communities, see traditional dress and performance, and explore rural areas where subsistence farming and customary exchange remain central.
The province is reached mainly by domestic flights into Mount Hagen Kagamuga Airport, followed by a road journey of about one hour to Banz. Small resorts, mission guesthouses and town lodges provide accommodation, while coffee, tea and fresh produce support the local economy.
For travellers, Jiwaka offers a quieter, high-altitude alternative to larger PNG towns, with cultural encounters, mountain scenery and practical road access along the Highlands Highway.

Jiwaka Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is the best period for road travel, outdoor activities and cultural visits in Jiwaka. June is especially lively because of the annual Waghi Show, while the wet season can make rural roads muddy and harder to navigate.
How to Get Around
Public motor vehicles run along the Highlands Highway and connect Banz, Minj, Kudjip and Mount Hagen. Taxis and private drivers operate in and around the towns, while a 4WD is useful for exploring Jimi District and more remote village roads.
Where to Stay
Banz is the most practical base, with guesthouses and the Jiwaka Mission Resort set among the hills. Smaller lodges and mission accommodation can also be found around Minj and Kudjip, while nearby Mount Hagen offers a wider range of hotels.
Food & Drink
Highlands cuisine centres on kaukau sweet potato, taro, greens and pork, often prepared in a mumu earth oven. Banz market is the place to find fresh local produce, and small guesthouse restaurants and cafés serve simple meals in the main towns.
