About Eastern Highlands

Goroka is the capital of Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands Province and one of the highlands' most important cultural and commercial centres. Set about 1,600 metres above sea level in the Asaro Valley, the town enjoys a mild highland climate often described as a perpetual spring.

Goroka grew as a small administrative and patrol post and remains centred on its airstrip, which still sits in the middle of town. Cultural institutions such as the J.K. McCarthy Museum, the Raun Raun Theatre Company and the National Film Institute reflect the town's role as a centre for highland heritage and the arts.

The town is best known for the annual Goroka Show, held around Independence Day in September. Since its beginnings in 1957, the event has become one of Papua New Guinea's most famous cultural gatherings, bringing together singsing groups, dancers and musicians from across the highlands, including the Asaro Valley's mudmen performers.

Coffee dominates the local economy, and the PNG Coffee Festival each May celebrates the region's growing specialty coffee scene. The bilum market showcases woven bags and highland crafts, while the University of Goroka and the PNG Institute of Medical Research add an educational and scientific presence to daily life.

For travellers, Goroka is a practical gateway to the Eastern Highlands and a stop on the Highlands Highway between Lae and Mount Hagen. Its compact town centre, regional airport and mix of cultural events, coffee estates and highland scenery make it relevant for both leisure visitors and business travellers.
