About Herrera
Chitré is the capital of Herrera Province and the main commercial gateway to Panama's Azuero Peninsula. Known locally as "the city that grows," it combines a compact, walkable centre with the practical services of a regional hub, including banks, shopping centres, hospitals and a convention centre.
Founded in 1848, Chitré predates Herrera Province, which was created in 1915. The city grew from a much older indigenous settlement and remains a centre of Panamanian folklore. San Juan Bautista Cathedral, built between 1896 and 1910, faces Parque Unión, the heart of daily life in the city.
Nearby La Arena is a small town known for pottery, traditional crafts and its aromatic bread. The Herrera Museum, housed in a colonial building, presents cultural and archaeological exhibits, while Sarigua National Park and the Las Macanas wetlands offer distinctive landscapes and birdwatching within easy reach.
Chitré is a convenient base for exploring the Azuero Peninsula, including beaches such as Pedasí and Playa Venao and the historic town of Las Tablas. Its Carnival celebrations, with parades, queens and wet parties, are among the most famous in Panama.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Chitré offers an authentic interior Panamanian atmosphere, practical amenities and connections to both Panama City and the surrounding countryside.
