About Mon State

Mawlamyine, formerly known as Moulmein, is the capital and largest city of Mon State and the fourth-largest city in Myanmar. Set on the eastern bank of the Thanlwin (Salween) River about 300 kilometres southeast of Yangon, it is a busy trading centre and seaport with a distinctive blend of Mon heritage, Burmese culture and British colonial history.

As the first capital of British Burma from 1826 to 1852, Mawlamyine retains an unusually rich colonial legacy of churches, administrative buildings and shophouses, especially along Strand Road and the riverside. Above the city, hilltop pagodas such as Kyaikthanlan, Mahamuni and U-zina shape the skyline; Kyaikthanlan Pagoda is the one made famous by Rudyard Kipling's poem Mandalay.

The city is best explored on foot or by trishaw, from the riverside market and teashops to quiet streets lined with timber and colonial-era houses. Across the river, Bilu Island offers village cycling and traditional craft workshops, while day trips south lead to the huge Win Sein Taw Ya reclining Buddha near Mudon and to Thanbyuzayat's war-era history.

As Mon State's main port and commercial hub, Mawlamyine supports trade in rubber, rice and other agricultural goods and serves as a gateway between Yangon and the southern coast. Its relaxed pace, Mon-language culture, riverfront food stalls and proximity to both Buddhist landmarks and colonial heritage make it relevant for leisure travellers and business visitors alike.

Mon State Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable period, with clear skies and lower humidity. The monsoon season from roughly May to October brings heavy rain and can make riverside and rural travel less predictable.

How to Get Around

Central Mawlamyine is walkable, and trishaws, motorbike taxis and taxis are widely used for shorter trips. Ferries cross the Thanlwin River to Bilu Island, while buses, shared pick-ups and bicycle or e-bike rentals help with travel to pagodas and nearby towns.

Where to Stay

Strand Road and the riverside area offer colonial-style and mid-range hotels with river views and easy access to the main sights. Budget guesthouses and smaller hotels are spread around the city centre and near Zeigyi market, while quieter options are found on the hillside.

Food & Drink

Mawlamyine is known for Mon and Burmese dishes such as mohinga, rice noodles, Mon-style curries and fresh river and seafood specialities. Teashops, riverside restaurants and the night food stalls near the market offer casual local eating throughout the day.
