About Chin

Hakha is the capital of Chin State in western Myanmar, a compact hill town set at around 1,900 metres in the mountainous Chin Hills. Its cool, misty climate, pine-covered slopes and strong Christian and Hakha Chin (Lai) heritage give the town a character quite different from Myanmar's lowland cities.

Hakha became the state capital in 1974, replacing Falam, and has since grown into Chin State's main administrative and educational centre. The town spreads over a U-shaped mountain slope, with churches, a central market and simple concrete and wooden buildings rising through the hills, while older traditions such as weaving and nose-flute music remain part of local identity.

Within Hakha, visitors can explore the market, local churches and viewpoints over the surrounding ridges, but the wider region provides the main draw. Nearby Thantlang and Falam, the heart-shaped Rih Lake, the Bungtla Waterfall near Matupi and Nat Ma Taung (Mount Victoria) National Park in southern Chin State offer trekking, birdwatching and encounters with Chin village life.

As a regional hub, Hakha hosts government offices, schools and Chin Christian College, and serves as a base for church, community and development travel. The local food scene is modest, built around rice, vegetables, meat and tea shops, while events such as Chin National Day and the Chin New Year festival bring the town to life.

For travellers, Hakha appeals mainly to those interested in mountain landscapes, minority cultures and adventure travel, as well as business and administrative visitors to Chin State. Reaching the town usually involves a long drive through the hills from Kalay or Bagan, which keeps Hakha quiet and far less visited than Myanmar's main tourist destinations.

Chin Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cool, dry months from November to February are generally the best time to visit Hakha, with clearer skies and easier road travel. The rainy season from around May to October can bring muddy roads and delays, while winter mornings in town are often cold and foggy.

How to Get Around

Hakha is a small, hilly town where many central areas can be explored on foot, and motorcycle taxis are a common way to move between neighbourhoods. For longer trips to Falam, Thantlang or Kalay, visitors usually use a private car or local shared vehicle, since public transport is limited and roads are steep.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Hakha is limited and mostly consists of small guesthouses and basic hotels near the town centre and main market. Many travellers also break the journey in Kalay, Mindat or Bagan and use Hakha as a base for exploring northern Chin State.

Food & Drink

Hakha's food is simple and local, with rice, chicken, pork, mountain vegetables and boiled or fermented dishes common in tea shops and small restaurants. Burmese and Chinese-influenced cooking is also available, and the central market is a good place to see fresh produce and everyday Chin ingredients.
