About Mejit

Mejit is a small, single coral island in the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands, different from most atolls because its former lagoon has filled in. The island covers only about 1.86 square kilometres and supports a compact, green landscape with freshwater ponds, breadfruit and pandanus trees.

The island is home to a close-knit Marshallese community of around 230 people. Daily life is traditional and centred on fishing, copra, breadfruit and handicrafts. Mejit is especially known for bwiro, a preserved fermented breadfruit, and for finely woven pandanus mats.

There is no urban centre. A simple network of paths and tracks connects the village, church, school, airstrip and shoreline. The airstrip was partly built on reclaimed land and receives small Air Marshall Islands flights from Majuro, making the island reachable for visitors and residents.

For travellers, Mejit offers a quiet and authentic outer-island experience, including reef and beach time, swimming, fishing and learning about local food and craft traditions. Services are limited, so visits require advance planning and community coordination.

Whether travelling for leisure, family visits, church or development work, Mejit provides a remote, low-impact destination where Marshallese custom and island life remain the focus.

Mejit Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Mejit has a warm tropical climate all year. The drier months from around December to April generally bring calmer seas and more comfortable conditions, while the rainy season from May to November can include heavier showers. Flights are limited, so confirm the weekly service from Majuro before planning.

How to Get Around

Mejit is small and best explored on foot or by bicycle. There are no buses or taxis, so visitors can also arrange short rides with local families or prebook a transfer. The airstrip is close to the village and most sites are within easy walking distance.

Where to Stay

Mejit has no hotels or resorts. Visitors usually arrange a homestay with a local family or a simple community guesthouse, with most accommodation located in or near the main village for easy access to the shore, church, school and airstrip.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on breadfruit, coconut, taro, fish and pandanus. Mejit is known for bwiro, a preserved fermented breadfruit, and visitors may be invited to try home-cooked Marshallese dishes. Most supplies arrive by ship or small plane, so options are simple and seasonal.
