About Nimba
Ganta, also known as Gompa City, is the largest city in Nimba County and Liberia's second-most populous urban centre. It sits just south of the Guinea border and works mainly as a busy market and transit town, with the central market and a white mosque with carved-star minarets among its most recognisable landmarks.
The city grew around the Ganta United Methodist Mission, established in 1926 by American missionary physician George Way Harley. The mission's hospital remains a major regional facility serving Nimba County and surrounding areas, and the town has rebuilt as a commercial crossroads after the disruptions of Liberia's civil wars.
Ganta is home to Mano and Gio (Dan) communities, and its market draws traders from across Liberia and neighbouring Guinea. Visitors come for the lively cross-border trade, local street life and the chance to experience daily life in northeastern Liberia rather than for conventional sightseeing.
Nearby, Mount Nimba and the East Nimba Nature Reserve offer forested slopes, savanna and the former LAMCO iron-mining landscape around Yekepa and Blue Lake. Sanniquellie, the county capital, lies to the northeast, while the main road links Ganta with Monrovia and the Guinea border.
For travellers, Ganta serves primarily as a commercial and stopover point. Business visitors use it for trade and logistics, and leisure travellers often pass through en route to the Nimba highlands or the border crossing, using a modest but practical base of guesthouses, market food and local transport.

Nimba Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the most practical time to visit, with drier roads and easier travel between Ganta, Yekepa and the Guinea border. The wet season from May to October brings heavy rain that can make unpaved routes muddy and slower.
How to Get Around
Ganta is compact enough to walk around the central market and main streets. Shared taxis, motorcycle taxis and minibuses cover local trips, while private transfers or a rented 4x4 are more comfortable for journeys to Sanniquellie, Yekepa and Mount Nimba.
Where to Stay
Ganta offers simple guesthouses and small hotels near the main road and market. Travellers heading to the Nimba highlands can stay in Yekepa or at Nimba Ecolodge near Blue Lake, while Sanniquellie provides additional options for exploring the county.
Food & Drink
Local meals centre on rice with cassava, palm butter, pepper soup and grilled fish or meat, served at market food stalls and small cookshops. The central market is also a good place to buy fresh produce and snacks used by traders and travellers.
