About Grand Gedeh

Zwedru is the capital of Grand Gedeh County in southeastern Liberia, near the Cavalla River and the border with Côte d'Ivoire. As the largest settlement in the southeast, it serves as a regional administrative, trading and transport hub for surrounding forest communities.

Formerly known as Tchien, the town grew as an inland centre for Krahn communities and became the county capital when Grand Gedeh was established. Its remote position and rainforest setting give it a quieter, small-town character than coastal Liberian cities, though the effects of Liberia's civil conflicts still shape much of its rebuilding.

Local life centres on the market, government offices and the William D. Coleman Airfield, while the Cavalla River and nearby forested areas provide the main natural landmarks. Visitors generally use Zwedru as a base for travel through Grand Gedeh and onward routes toward the Ivorian border.

Accommodation and services remain limited, so most travellers treat Zwedru as a practical stopover rather than a conventional tourist destination. It is relevant mainly for government, NGO and business travel connected to the county, as well as overland journeys through eastern Liberia.

Grand Gedeh Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is the most practical time to visit Zwedru, when roads are generally easier to navigate. Heavy rains from May to October can make rural routes muddy and slow travel around Grand Gedeh County.

How to Get Around

Within Zwedru, shared taxis and motorbike taxis are the most common way to move between the market, guesthouses and government offices. For longer journeys, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended because road conditions vary widely.

Where to Stay

Lodging is limited and mostly consists of small guesthouses and basic hotels near the town centre. Travellers on longer trips often overnight in Zwedru before continuing to Monrovia, other county towns or the nearby border area.

Food & Drink

Meals in Zwedru centre on Liberian staples such as rice, cassava, palm butter, pepper soup and grilled fish or meat. Small local restaurants, cookshops and market stalls provide the main dining options.
