About Mārupe
Mārupe is a rapidly growing town in Latvia, located just southwest of Riga in the wider Riga metropolitan area. As the centre of Mārupe Municipality, it combines a modern suburban residential character with green surroundings, and lies only a short drive from Riga International Airport.
The settlement takes its name from the Mārupīte stream, which flows through the area past the historic Māra's Pond. Mārupe developed after the opening of the Riga–Tukums railway in 1877 and later became known for greenhouse horticulture during the Soviet period. It received town status on 1 July 2022, reflecting decades of population growth and urban development.
Visitors can explore outdoor attractions such as Jaunmārupe Nature Park, the sculpture park beside the Mārupīte and the Medema Swamp Trail. Nearby Švarcenieki Manor and Babīte Lake add to the area's appeal, while the Mārupe Wake Park offers active recreation in the warmer months. Surrounding settlements including Jaunmārupe, Tīraine, Skulte and Piņķi form the wider municipality.
Because of its position beside Riga International Airport, the municipality is an important location for aviation, logistics and business services, and is home to the headquarters of airBaltic. Modern sports complexes, a cultural centre and regular local events support an active community life.
For travellers, Mārupe works well as a quiet base with quick access to Riga, the airport and the Baltic coast around Jūrmala. Its combination of nature, growing services and proximity to the capital makes it relevant for both leisure visitors and business travellers.
