About Khammouane

Thakhek is the riverside capital of Khammouane Province in south-central Laos, set on the Mekong River opposite Nakhon Phanom in Thailand. The town is a calm, compact gateway to the limestone karst landscapes, caves and rural villages of the Thakhek Loop, one of Laos' best-known motorbike circuits.

The town's French colonial buildings, fountain square and riverfront promenade reflect its history as a Mekong trading and administrative centre. The gilded That Sikhottabong stupa south of the centre is an important local religious landmark, while the Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge links Thakhek with northeastern Thailand.

Most visitors use Thakhek as a base for day trips and multi-day loops through Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area. The standout attraction is Kong Lor Cave, a roughly 7.5 km navigable underground river through a karst mountain, along with caves, waterfalls and viewpoints scattered along the loop routes.

In the centre, guesthouses, cafés and small restaurants cluster near the Mekong, and the night market offers Lao barbecue, noodle dishes and riverside sunset views. The town also functions as a border trade and transport hub, with growing links to the Thakhek Specific Economic Zone and cross-border business traffic.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Thakhek offers an accessible mix of adventure tourism, riverside calm, colonial heritage and practical connections between Laos and Thailand.

Khammouane Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to February offers cooler, drier conditions and is the most comfortable time for the Thakhek Loop, cave visits and riverfront exploring. October to March is also workable, while the wet season from May to October can make some loop roads and cave approaches more difficult.

How to Get Around

Central Thakhek is walkable, with tuk-tuks, songthaews and motorbike or bicycle rentals available for short trips. For the Thakhek Loop and cave excursions, most visitors rent motorbikes or book guided transport, while buses connect Thakhek with Vientiane and other Lao towns.

Where to Stay

Riverside guesthouses, boutique hotels and budget stays are concentrated around the old centre near the fountain square, night market and Mekong promenade. Staying centrally makes it easy to arrange loop transport, reach the bus station and enjoy evening river views.

Food & Drink

Thakhek offers Lao noodle soups, grilled meats and Lao barbecue, with cafés and restaurants along the riverside and around the night market. Fresh markets sell local produce, while bakeries and colonial-era cafés add a relaxed stop between cave and loop trips.
