About Bokeo

Houayxay is the capital of Bokeo Province in northwestern Laos, a compact Mekong River town facing Chiang Khong in Thailand. It is best known as the launch point for the two-day slow boat journey to Luang Prabang and as the base for the Gibbon Experience, a forest-conservation project in Nam Kan National Park.

The town has a quiet riverside character built around a long stretch of the Mekong. The Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge connects Houayxay with Thailand, making it an active border crossing while the waterfront itself stays relaxed, with boats, guesthouses and restaurants overlooking the river.

Local landmarks include Wat Jom Khao Manilat, a hilltop temple with views over the Mekong, and Fort Carnot, a small French colonial fort now used for local administration. The morning market, riverfront promenade and nearby ethnic villages add a modest but genuine sense of northern Lao life.

Houayxay's main appeal lies in nature-based experiences. The Gibbon Experience offers guided treks, ziplines and overnight treehouse stays in the Bokeo forest canopy, while the slow boat to Luang Prabang passes through one of the Mekong's most scenic stretches with an overnight stop in Pakbeng.

For both leisure and business travellers, Houayxay works as a practical gateway: it links overland routes between Thailand and northern Laos and gives access to the wider Golden Triangle region, while remaining a small, easy-to-navigate town.

Bokeo Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit Houayxay, with lower humidity and pleasant river journeys. The rainy season from May to October can affect rural roads and boat schedules, though the landscape is green and quiet.

How to Get Around

Houayxay is small enough to explore on foot, while tuk-tuks and songthaews cover trips to the airport, pier and bus station. Slow boats run downstream to Luang Prabang, and motorbike rentals are common for independent travel around Bokeo Province.

Where to Stay

Riverside guesthouses along the Mekong are the most popular choice for views and easy access to the slow boat pier. Small hotels and guesthouses near the main street suit short stays, while the Gibbon Experience treehouses offer an adventurous overnight option in the forest.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on sticky rice, larb, noodle soups and Mekong river fish, with simple restaurants and stalls around the market and riverfront. The morning market is good for local produce and snacks, while riverside cafés and restaurants are popular at sunset.
