About Osh

Osh is Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city and the main urban centre of the southern Fergana Valley. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia, it grew as a Silk Road trading post and still feels like a living crossroads of Kyrgyz, Uzbek and other cultures. Its compact centre is dominated by Sulaiman-Too, a sacred limestone mountain that rises directly above the city.

The city's long history is visible around Sulaiman-Too, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2009 and holds caves, shrines and small museums. Nearby, Jayma Bazaar continues centuries of market trading with food, textiles and everyday goods, while the 16th-century Rabat Abdul Khan Mosque and restored old madrasahs show the city's Islamic and Silk Road heritage.

Central Osh is best explored on foot between Sulaiman-Too, the bazaar and the riverside parks. The National Historical and Archaeological Museum is built into the mountain, and the Osh Regional Museum of Fine Arts adds a contemporary cultural stop. Older mahalla streets, Soviet-era apartment blocks and public squares give different parts of the city distinct character.

As a regional trade and transport hub near the Uzbekistan border, Osh has practical importance for business and is a common starting point for trips into the Alay and Pamir mountains. Its food culture is a draw in itself, with plov, samsa, manty, lagman and shashlik served in chaikhanas and busy market eateries.

Leisure travellers come for Sulaiman-Too, the bazaar and mountain routes, while business visitors value the city's markets, transport links and role as southern Kyrgyzstan's commercial centre. Osh International Airport connects the city to regional and international destinations.
