About Osh

Osh is Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city and the main urban centre of the south, set in the Fergana Valley near the Uzbek border. Its identity is shaped by more than two millennia of Silk Road trade and an ethnically mixed population, mainly Kyrgyz and Uzbek.

The city's best-known landmark is Sulaiman-Too, the sacred mountain rising above the old centre and Kyrgyzstan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site; its slopes hold cave shrines, a small museum and viewpoints over the city. Nearby, the large Jayma Bazaar has been a trading place for centuries, while the 25-metre Lenin statue on the central square is among the largest surviving monuments of its kind in Central Asia.

Osh divides roughly between the historic south bank, with the bazaar, Sulaiman-Too and narrow streets, and the more modern north bank with wider avenues, hotels and services. Central districts around the Ak-Buura river and the Aravanskaya area concentrate shops, teahouses and everyday local life.

As a gateway to southern Kyrgyzstan, Osh is the starting point for journeys toward the Alay Valley and the Pamir Highway. Its economy revolves around trade, markets, textiles and food processing, and Osh International Airport connects the city with Bishkek, Russia and regional destinations.

For visitors, Osh offers a distinctive mix of history, bazaar culture and Kyrgyz-Uzbek food traditions, making it relevant for both leisure travellers and business people working in the Fergana Valley.
