About Prizren
Prizren is Kosovo's second-largest city and its historic cultural capital, set in southern Kosovo where the Lumbardhi River meets the foothills of the Šar Mountains. Its compact old town, Ottoman-era landmarks and relaxed riverside atmosphere give the city a distinctive character among the region's urban centres.
Founded on an ancient settlement site, Prizren carries layers of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Serbian and Ottoman history. The hilltop Prizren Fortress overlooks the old town, while the 17th-century Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš, the Old Stone Bridge and Shadervan Square are among its best-known monuments. In 1878, the League of Prizren met here, marking an important moment in the Albanian national movement.
The old town below the fortress is the heart of the city, with narrow lanes, craft workshops and traditional houses along the river. Around Shadervan, visitors find cafés, restaurants and local life, while the Maraš neighbourhood and riverside promenades add quieter places to walk and explore.
Prizren is home to Dokufest, a major international documentary and short film festival held each August that fills the old town with screenings and audiences. Traditional Albanian and Balkan cooking, coffee culture and a growing number of festivals support the city's appeal, while tourism, small-scale manufacturing and local services anchor its economy.
For leisure travellers, Prizren offers heritage, mountain scenery and a compact, walkable centre. Business visitors find a smaller but active regional hub with conference spaces, hotels and easy access to the rest of Kosovo, making it suitable for cultural trips, meetings and combined work-and-leisure stays.

Prizren Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the old town and the fortress, with mild weather and fewer crowds than midsummer. August is lively because of Dokufest, while summer brings warm days and winter is quieter with occasional snow in the surrounding mountains.
How to Get Around
Prizren's historic centre is compact and best explored on foot, especially around Shadervan and the Lumbardhi riverside. City buses and taxis cover the wider municipality, and intercity buses link Prizren with Pristina and other Kosovar towns.
Where to Stay
The old town and Shadervan area are the most convenient for sights, cafés and restaurants, with hotels, guesthouses and small boutique stays nearby. Quieter options are available along the river and on the edges of the centre.
Food & Drink
Prizren's food scene centres on traditional Albanian and Balkan cooking, including qebapa, burek, tavë and grilled meats, alongside strong coffee culture. Riverside cafés, family restaurants and the Shadervan area offer plenty of places to eat and drink.
