About Gjilan
Gjilan is a compact commercial and administrative city in southeastern Kosovo, at the centre of the Gjilan District and the wider Anamorava region. Its position between Pristina and the borders with Serbia and North Macedonia makes it a practical base for travel through eastern Kosovo.
Much of the city's identity is tied to its Ottoman-era past. The old centre grew around the Gjinolli family settlement from the mid-18th century and still preserves landmarks such as the Atik Mosque, the Clock Tower and the restored Hysen Pasha Palace, which now houses the Ethnological Museum. Nearby, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas reflects the city's religious and cultural mix.
Central Gjilan is easy to explore on foot, with main streets such as Ibrahim Rugova and Zija Shemsiu linking the bazaar area, City Park and the City Theatre. The Dardania I and II neighbourhoods show the city's later residential growth, while outside the centre visitors can reach Pogragja Fortress, Livoq Lake and the wooded countryside around the Mirusha River.
Gjilan remains an important regional centre for agriculture, trade and small manufacturing, and its café culture, traditional restaurants and weekly market are part of everyday local life. Football clubs SC Gjilani and FC Drita give the city a strong local sporting identity, and public festivals draw visitors during the warmer months.
For leisure travellers, Gjilan offers a low-key introduction to eastern Kosovo's Ottoman heritage and rural landscapes, while business visitors value its road connections to Pristina and its role as a service hub for the surrounding municipalities.
