About Kajiado
Kajiado is the small administrative capital of Kajiado County in southern Kenya, set about 80 kilometres south of Nairobi along the Nairobi–Arusha highway. It works as a county headquarters and market town at the heart of Maasai pastoralist country, where cattle, goats and sheep remain central to daily life.
The county is the historic homeland of the Maasai, and Kajiado town grew from a colonial-era administrative post into the seat of the present-day county government. Around the town, manyatta homesteads, colourful beadwork, livestock markets and strong pastoral traditions keep Maasai culture visible in everyday routines and ceremonies.
Although the town itself is compact, it sits close to some of Kenya's best-known wild landscapes. Amboseli National Park, with its elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, lies to the south, while Lake Magadi, the Ngong Hills, Olorgesailie Prehistoric Site and Shompole Conservancy are all within reach in the county.
Nearby urban centres such as Kitengela, Ngong and Ongata Rongai offer more shops, restaurants and accommodation, while Kajiado town remains a practical stopover on the route to the Namanga border and Tanzania. Livestock trade, county administration and safari tourism shape the local economy.
For travellers, Kajiado works best as a gateway: business visitors come for county government offices and development work, while leisure visitors use it as a base for cultural encounters, wildlife safaris and journeys deeper into Maasai country.
