About Pavlodar

Pavlodar is a major city in northeastern Kazakhstan and the administrative centre of Pavlodar Region, set on the right bank of the Irtysh River. Founded in 1720 as a Cossack outpost and renamed in 1861 to mark the birth of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, the city grew from a salt-trading settlement into one of Kazakhstan's leading industrial centres.

The historic core along Astana Street preserves merchant houses, Siberian wooden architecture and landmarks such as the former trading house of merchant Derov, now the Pavlodar History Museum. The six-kilometre Irtysh embankment is among Kazakhstan's longest riverside promenades and links Victory Square, Central Square and the city beach.

Landmarks include the eight-pointed Mashkhur Zhusup Mosque, the red-brick Cathedral of the Annunciation, the Chekhov Russian Drama Theater and Gorsad Park. The Goose Flight paleontological site and the Ertis Museum display prehistoric finds uncovered along the river, adding an unusual scientific dimension to the city.

Pavlodar is also an industrial and business centre known for aluminum, oil refining and petrochemical production, served by a compact network of buses, trams and marshrutkas. Its riverside paths, parks, cafés and mix of Kazakh and Russian cultural life make it relevant for both business visitors and travellers exploring northern Kazakhstan.
