About Michael
Michael is a small parish and village on the Isle of Man's north-west coast, centred on the linear settlement of Kirk Michael. The area sits along the A3 between Peel and Ramsey, facing the Irish Sea and backed by the Michael hills, with a quiet rural character that contrasts with the island's busier south.
Kirk Michael's best-known landmark is St Michael and All Angels church, rebuilt in the 1830s and home to the island's largest collection of Norse crosses, several dating back to the sixth century; the churchyard holds the graves of several Manx bishops. The Old Courthouse and The Mitre pub, said to be one of the island's oldest, anchor the village's historic core.
Around the village, Glen Wyllin offers a long beach and popular campsite, while the wooded Glen Mooar leads to Spooyt Vane, one of the island's tallest waterfalls. Bishopscourt, the former residence of the Bishop of Sodor and Man, stands just north-east of the village, and a network of coastal and upland paths makes the parish a natural base for walking and cycling.
During the Isle of Man TT races, Kirk Michael becomes a celebrated spectator point on the Mountain Course, with bikes passing at high speed through the village's narrow main street. Alongside its small cluster of shops, pub and tearooms, the village's position between Peel and Ramsey makes it a practical base for exploring the west and north of the island.
