About Papua Pegunungan
Wamena is the capital of Highland Papua and the largest town in the Indonesian highlands, set in the Baliem Valley about 1,650 metres above sea level. Surrounded by the Jayawijaya Mountains, it is the main gateway to one of Indonesia's most distinctive highland regions and its Dani, Lani and Yali communities.
The town grew from a small trading settlement into the administrative and economic centre of the valley, while remaining closely tied to traditional village life. Local markets, especially the central Sinatma market, bring together traders from surrounding districts and are known for fresh produce and handmade crafts.
Popular experiences around Wamena include visiting Dani villages such as Jiwika, seeing the preserved mummy at Kurulu, crossing the valley's suspension bridges and trekking toward smaller communities and viewpoints. The Baliem Valley Festival, usually held in August, draws visitors for traditional war dances, pig feasts and village competitions.
Wamena is reached almost entirely by air through Wamena Airport, which connects the town with Jayapura and other parts of Papua. Its cool climate, compact centre and strong local culture make it relevant for adventurous travellers and for government, trade and NGO-related visits.

Papua Pegunungan Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from roughly May to October is the most practical time to visit Wamena, with clearer weather for walking and village visits. August is a highlight for the Baliem Valley Festival, while the wetter months can make trails and rural roads more difficult.
How to Get Around
The town centre of Wamena is compact enough to explore on foot, while motorcycle taxis and local minibuses cover short trips around town. Reaching villages and trekking routes usually requires a local guide, and vehicles are limited beyond the main roads.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated around the town centre, near Wamena Airport and the main market. Trekkers often combine a Wamena hotel with simple village homestays when exploring the Baliem Valley.
Food & Drink
Local food is based on sweet potato, vegetables and pork, with dishes such as babi bakar and earth-oven meals served at traditional gatherings. Simple restaurants, food stalls and the central market are the main places to eat, alongside local coffee and fruit.
