About Sulawesi Tenggara
Kendari is the capital of Southeast Sulawesi, a compact port city on the shores of Kendari Bay along Sulawesi's southeastern coast. Known locally as Kota Lulo, it combines provincial administration, trade and services with a relaxed waterfront character and strong Tolaki cultural roots.
The city grew from a small coastal settlement into a provincial capital after Southeast Sulawesi was established in 1964. Landmarks include the Al-Alam Mosque, which appears to float on Kendari Bay at high tide, and the Bahteramas Bridge linking the city with areas across the bay. Traditional arts such as the Lulo dance remain part of local identity and public celebrations.
The commercial and hotel districts of Mandonga, Kadia and Baruga contain shopping centres, offices and dining, while the Kendari Bay promenade is popular in the evening. For nature, visitors head to Nambo Beach or take a short boat ride from Soropia Pier to Bokori Island's white-sand shoreline.
As the provincial seat of government and a regional trade hub, Kendari supports business travel linked to administration, mining, plantations, education and logistics. Halu Oleo University, the port and a range of business hotels keep the city connected to provincial and national networks.
Leisure travellers come for the bay, seafood and coastal scenery, while business visitors rely on Kendari as the main gateway to Southeast Sulawesi's administrative and resource economy.
